Now you can call it a festival of Pumpkin or festival of return of dead ones, but this festival has origin in current United Kingdom. It originates from Celtic, currently in Northern Ireland. They used to call this Samhain. Celtic priests, Druids, used this night, night of 31st October, which is the night before new year, to predict They had a belief that during new year day, the boundaries between the world of living and dead become blur and the dead ones return to the living people’s world. Druids can use this return to gather the information they wanted for future. Hence they celebrated the night of 31st October, as Samhein (pronounced as sow-in) night.
Later when Christianity spread all over this region, Pope (Pope Boniface IV) started All Saint’s Day celebrations on 1st November, called as All-Hallowmas. The day prior to it, was called as All-Hallows Eve later termed as Halloween.
